Anti-Violence & Gun Safety

Banks are important advocates for gun violence prevention. Amalgamated Bank is proud to partner with many organizations creating a safer society and we are using our voice to set the industry standard so that all financial institutions can help keep their communities safe from gun violence. As our CEO Priscilla Sims Brown recently said on CBS News: “This is our responsibility.”

Our voice

  • Petitioned to set industry standard by creating new merchant category code for gun and ammunition stores – a key tool in the fight to stop illegal gun sales
  • First bank to endorse Everytown for Gun Safety’s principles for responsible practices for gun manufacturers and distributors
  • The only bank to demand background checks and red flag laws in a letter to the U.S. Senate following a string of mass shootings across the United States
  • Led a shareholder activism program against Sturm Ruger demanding that they follow common sense practices as established by Everytown
  • Proud participants in Wear Orange Day in support of National Gun Violence Awareness Day
  • First U.S. bank to announce a policy against nuclear weapons

Our money

  • We do not lend to gun, nuclear weapon, or ammunition manufacturers or distributors
  • We do not invest our own money in guns, nuclear weapons, or ammunition manufacturers or distributors
  • We offer investment portfolios that screen out investments in guns, nuclear weapons, and ammunition
  • Amalgamated Foundation implemented a “Rapid Response” program to donate immediately to victims of the El Paso and Dayton shootings and raised $38,000

The light at the end of the pandemic tunnel has gotten a little brighter recently, especially as the number of U.S. COVID-related hospitalizations continues to dwindle and the number of fully vaccinated people in the country reaches nearly 40% of the population.1

Today, Amalgamated Bank announced its endorsement of HR 40, which is calling upon the Federal Government to form a Commission to explore reparations for African Americans. As of now, we are the first major U.S. bank to endorse HR 40, but are hopeful we are not the last.

Amalgamated Bank was founded almost 100 years ago to create a diverse, inclusive, and egalitarian community for labor workers. These tenets of our founding are elevated again today as we proudly announce that the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index (HRC CEI) has designated Amalgamated Bank “One of the Best Places to Work” in 2021.
